Halloween History

Halloween’s history is thought to date back to Celtic times when the ancient celtic fire festive of ‘Samhuinn'(pronounced Sow-en) meaning ‘Summers end’ in Scottish Gaelic originated. It was when summer ended and signalled the onset of a cold dark Winter, or turning of the years when the door between the living and the dead was said to become a thin veil.

On a specific date, Samhuinn was celebrated in the belief that the ghosts of the the dead returned to earth. Over time, Halloween has evolved into a secular community based fun event celebrated worldwide on the night of October 31st.

It is characterised by people dressing up in Halloween costumes such as zombies, vampires, witches, ghouls, devils, draculas, werewolves, skeletons etc. Anything that symbolised the supernatural or otherworldly.

During the celebrations the celts wore costumes of Animal Heads or Beasts and Skins. They dressed up as devils, angels and saints. The All Saints (All-hallows) and the night before it, Samhain or Samhuinn, began to therefore be called “All-hallows eve” which eventually became Halloween.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][/vc_column][/vc_row]
